Welcome to Abre Camino, the first-ever exhibit of Segunda Quimbamba!

We are so thrilled to announce the opening of the new exhibit “Abre Camino: 30 Years of Segunda Quimbamba”!! This amazing show will focus on the history and legacy of Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center in New Jersey and beyond. We can’t wait to see the incredible work on display, including archival images of the band’s early days, artwork by Segunda Quimbamba members and supporters, and even costumes from previous performances. The exhibit will run at Guttenberg Arts from Oct. 15 through Dec. 2.

The opening reception will take place on October 15th, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Guttenberg Arts, located at 6903 Jackson St, Guttenberg, NJ 07093. This event marks the beginning of a two-month showcase of Segunda Quimbamba’s remarkable legacy.

 

“Abre Camino,” which translates to “Road Opener,” symbolizes the group’s commitment to breaking new ground in preserving and promoting Bomba & Plena drumming and dancing traditions in New Jersey. Segunda Quimbamba has been a cornerstone of the community for three decades, offering captivating performances, educational workshops, and a deep connection to heritage.

The closing reception will be held on December 2nd, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the same location, providing a final opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the group’s history and artistic achievements. The “Abre Camino” exhibition will showcase a diverse range of artworks including work by Rafael and Ricardo Torres, performances, markets and archival materials that reflect Segunda Quimbamba’s influence in Jersey City and beyond. It will be a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and resistance of Bomba & Plena.
